The Value of R: The "R" in R-value stands for "resistance", as in resistance to heat flow. As the R-value rises, so does the resistance to heat-- and therefore the insulative value. When we're talking about insulation, we typically express a product's R-value in two ways:
- R-value per inch: Insulation materials are manufactured differently, and in different thickness. Manufacturers rate their products in terms of its R-value per inch. If you were to multiply the material's R-value, the final number would bring you the....
- Overall/Total R-value: This number measures the total insulative value of the installation. It's also used to describe the insulation value of a complete building -- such as a wall that includes studs, plywood, siding, insulation, and drywall.
Thermographic Imagery Measures a Building's Insulation Efficiency Rating.
